Mixed Media Artist and Photographer
Artist Statement
I like to say my work is “slightly hazardous.” Not because of the subject matter — though life in the Diaspora has plenty of grit — but because resin sticks to everything, including me. More than once I’ve nearly walked out of my studio attached to a canvas. But truthfully, I’ve been happily stuck to art my whole life.
I merge photography and painting, two passions I refuse to choose between. I cut and collage my photos, layer them onto painted surfaces, and seal them with resin to create three-dimensional pieces. The result isn’t flat art you politely view from a distance — it’s work that pulls you in. I want you to feel like you’re stepping into a house, riding a ferry, or leaning into a conversation with the aunties.
My practice balances humor with commitment. I’ve been honored to exhibit four years in a row in the juried Black Creativity Exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and to complete major commissions, including a large painting for the Barnes Jewish Hospital lobby. I’ve also shown in numerous exhibitions, each one reminding me that art can be both serious and playful.
For me, photography brings truth, painting adds feeling, and resin preserves it all like a time capsule. Together, they allow me to tell stories of people you may never meet but will never forget — hopefully without gluing myself to the gallery floor.
